    Description

    Lovely 1794 V-2 Half Dime, MS64

1794 H10C MS64 NGC. V-2, LM-2, R.5. Close date, two inner berries below left wing. A gorgeous example with reflective and fully lustrous fields beneath peripheral album toning on each side. The obverse is prooflike and the reverse is satiny, creating a delightful appearance. Typical central weakness is evident on both sides of this near-Gem. Only a few tiny surface marks keep it from a higher grade. While only scarce, even at this grade level, few opportunities exist to acquire a comparable specimen as most known pieces are tightly held in long-term collections. Additional demand for this coin comes from those who desire first-year of issue coinage designs.
The reverse has a short die crack joining the eagle's legs just above the claws. Otherwise, there is no evidence of die cracks or clash marks on either side. Four varieties are known for the 1794 half dimes, all actually struck in 1795. Half dollars and dollars were the only silver coins produced in 1794, and then only in the fourth quarter of the year. The reported mintage of 7,756 coins is the total of the half dime delivery from the chief coiner that is dated March 30, 1795.
It is obvious that the Mint contemplated such a coin in 1794, as three different obverse dies are known. The V-2 or LM-2 die combination consists of the first use for a new obverse die, mated with the second use of the reverse die. Census: 21 in 64, 5 finer (10/07).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 22ZT, PCGS# 4250)

    Weight: 1.35 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
