    Desirable 1794 Near-Gem Half Dime

1794 H10C MS64 PCGS. V-2, LM-2, R.5. On the obverse, digit 1 of the date is under the right center of curl 1 equidistant between the curl and dentils, star 1 is joined to curl 1 and curl 2, and the base of digit 4 almost touches the dentil; on the reverse, a leaf pair is below the second S in STATES, and a leaf point ends beneath the center of the U in UNITED. In their book on Federal Half dimes, 1792-1837, Russell Logan and John McCloskey write that this is: "A scarce die marriage that is hard to locate in Mint State. The Eliasberg example was described as MS63, prooflike and was auctioned by Bowers and Merena, 5/96: 885."
The coin we offer here is richly toned in dove-gray and dusky powder-blue and apricot colors. A crisply struck near-Gem that has bold hair locks and star centers and only slight softness on the feathers of the eagle's breast. Most of the dentilation shows, and the design elements are well centered n the planchet. A mint-made thin planchet streak below the eagle's right (facing) wing and a faint pinscratch on Liberty's chin are not offensive and do not appear to limit the grade. The Flowing Hair half dime type was only produced for two years, and the initial 1794 issue is much scarcer than its 1795 counterpart. Four die marriages are known for the 1794 issue, and although all are elusive, only V-1 exceeds Valentine-2 in rarity. Population: 9 in 64, 8 finer (11/06).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 22ZT, PCGS# 4250)
