1794 Half Dime, Deeply Toned MS62
    Rare V-2, LM-2 Variety

1794 H10C V-2, LM-2, R.5, MS62 PCGS. Three obverse dies were paired with three reverse dies to create four die marriage varieties for the 1794 half dime, of which LM-2 is the second-rarest, behind only the extremely rare LM-1 variety. All of the 1794-dated half dimes were actually struck in March 1795, and it is believed only 7,756 pieces were produced with these dies. The early Mint did not have the luxury of being able to discard out-dated working dies at the end of the year if they were still serviceable, and it was not uncommon for dies to be employed well into the following year. As a date, the 1794 half dime is many times rarer than the 1795, and its popularity as the first issue of the denomination produced within the early Mint's walls is unsurpassable.

This Mint State representative displays well-struck central devices, with bold borders and a lack of adjustment marks. Deep bluish-gray toning blankets much of each side, though brighter olive-gold hues are seen in the protected regions. The opportunity to acquire any 1794 half dime in Mint State is rare, and an example of this seldom-seen variety is rarer still. (NGC ID# 22ZT, Variety PCGS# 38582, Base PCGS# 4250)
