    Description

Mint State 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime

1795 H10C MS63 NGC. LM-8, V-5, R.3. Silvery-gray in color and lustrous in the fields as expected for the grade. Toned with darker gold and blue through the stars and on the reverse in the fields, but the devices are bright. The strike is decent for the issue, with only slight weakness on the upper curls of Liberty and the eagle's breast. Of importance to the collector are the heavy adjustment marks which cross over Liberty's face and hair, and these do disturb several important design elements. Nevertheless, adjustment marks were part of the minting process, and a substantial number of silver and gold coins from this era show evidence of being adjusted with a metal file prior to being struck. Often times the adjustment marks were obliterated or nearly so by the striking process, but not so on this coin. Given the obvious limitations of the somewhat primitive early Philadelphia Mint, rolling out silver ingots into precisely the correct thickness for planchets must have been a nightmare. It would be far easier to make the planchets slightly thick, then adjust them down to the proper weight with a file, rather than having a planchet which was too thin and thus had to be melted and redrawn through the entire rolling process again. This half dime bears witness to the obvious step saving economies of the day. This is the usual die state with the obverse die crack down from the rim through the Y of LIBERTY to Liberty's nose.(#4251) (Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 22ZV, PCGS# 4251)
