    Marvelous 1795 Half Dime, V-4, LM-10, MS66

1795 H10C MS66 ★ NGC. V-4, LM-10, R.3. This is the Logan-McCloskey Obverse 8-Reverse G combination: On the obverse star 1 grazes the tip of star 2, and star 15 connects with the forward bust truncation. The base of the digit 1 is centered over two dentils with its top flag touching the bust, as does the top right of the 5 in the date. The I in LIBERTY is below the adjacent B, and TY are close at their tops. On the reverse there is no inner berry under the eagle's left (facing) wing, while the one outer berry extends nearly to the N in UNITED. The upper right serif of the I in UNITED connects to the lower tip of the left wing.
This is the sole use of this obverse die, which apparently clashed early with the reverse and was subsequently lapped, leaving the peripheral stars on the obverse with a "spindly" appearance. This is a late-state coin: The die crack above TY and star 9 has here formed into an extensive retained cud that extends from the left side of the upright of T to halfway between stars 9 and 10. There are numerous wispy die cracks among and around each of stars 9 through 15.
The present coin also encapsulates the single use of Reverse G, although here the dies seem to be in a relatively earlier state than the obverse shows. A small die crack runs from the rim above the D in UNITED through two leaves.
Although a couple of small adjustment marks are noted in the center obverse, they pale in comparison to the wealth of detail apparent throughout both sides. The hair curls are sculptural in their definition, and the central reverse betrays mentionable softness only on the center eagle's breast and the top of the left (facing) wing, far more detailed than normal.
Both the notable lack of contact and the marvelous original rim toning, in shades of gold, sky-blue, and cinnamon, with untoned silver centers, more than merit the Star designation for exceptional eye appeal.
