1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime, AU58
V-6, LM-9, Late Die State Example

1795 H10C V-6, LM-9, R.4, AU58 PCGS. The LM-9 variety was part of a famous hoard of more than 100 Mint State 1795 half dimes discovered in the late 1870s, along with examples of the LM-8 and LM-10 varieties. While all ten varieties of Flowing Hair half dimes are scarce, the LM-8, 9, and 10 are somewhat more available in finer grades as a result of the hoard. This near-Mint LM-9 is struck from a late state of the dies, with a bold bisecting die crack from the rim above Y to the nose, face, and neck through the 7, to the bottom rim. A small cud exists at the junction of the crossbar and upright of the 7. A glass reveals bold die clashing on both sides of this sharply defined, attractively toned early half dime. A few small marks exist but no adjustment marks are present. Gold highlights add splendid eye appeal to the natural, warm-gray surfaces. (Variety PCGS# 38593, Base PCGS# 4251)
