Important 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dime, An Original Near-Gem

1795 H10C MS 64 NGC. V-5, LM-8, R.3. Dispersed by William Elliott Woodward in 1880, the Wadsworth-Rea hoard included nearly 100 Mint State 1795 half dimes. We have offered several high grade representatives of this issue in recent years, and all have displayed similar, original toning. With richly toned, charcoal and cobalt surfaces, the present example probably owes its existence to this hoard. Still, the number of high quality type collectors in today's hobby ensures that these pristine survivors receive undivided bidder attention whenever they appear at auction. With the exception of trivial softness around the peripheries, this is an uncommonly well struck coin for a product of the early Mint. The hair curls and star centrils on the obverse, as well as the eagle's breast feathers on the reverse, are crisply detailed. The surfaces are free of noticeable blemishes, but a die crack and several adjustment marks (all as struck) are noted over and before Liberty's portrait.
