    Description

    R.6 1796/5 Half Dime, V-2, LM-2
High-Grade Draped Bust, Small Eagle Type

1796/5 H10C MS62+ PCGS Secure. V-2, LM-2, R.6. Only two die varieties are known for the 1796 half dimes, the overdate 1796/5 V-2, LM-2 combination, rated very rare at R.6, and the nonoverdate V-1, LM-1, a much more frequently encountered die pairing at R.3, or scarce. The 1796 LIKERTY half dime is also listed in the Guide Book and frequently collected as a third "variety," but in reality it is a die state, not a separate die marriage. The LIKERTY is a late state of the obverse die in the V-1, LM-1 pairing.
The present 1796/5 variety is struck from a different obverse and reverse die from that of the V-1, LM-1, showing remnants of the previous underdigit 5 under the 6 and the B in LIBERTY broken at the bottom. The digit 1 is slightly separated from the lowest curl. The reverse shows an outer berry between the NI of UNITED. This MS62+ example shows primarily silver centers complementing tinges of pinkish-gray and gold on each side. There are few signs of contact, but the centers are somewhat softly struck, most noticeably on the eagle's breast. A typically seen die crack on the reverse runs from the last T, through the leaves, neck, clouds, the right stem tip, and back to the rim. Despite the strike softness this is a beautiful early type coin, with no planchet adjustment marks or other distractions, an excellent potential acquisition to represent the first year of the Draped Bust, Small Eagle type. Population: 1 in 62+, 5 finer (2/12).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 22ZY, PCGS# 4255)

    Weight: 1.35 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper
