1797 13 Stars Half Dime, AU Details
    Rare V-1, LM-4 Variety

1797 H10C 13 Stars, V-1, LM-4, R.5 -- Plugged -- NGC Details. AU. This is easily the rarest of four known die varieties for this date and denomination, three of which exhibit differing numbers of obverse stars: either 15, 16, or 13. Two 16 Stars varieties exist, from the same obverse die, and paired with different reverse dies. The 13 Stars variant, as seen here, was the last 1797 half dime type produced, after Mint personnel realized that adding a new star to the obverse of U.S. coins, every time a new state was admitted to the Union, was an impractical policy. This attractive specimen displays lovely blended lilac-gray and rose toning, along with bold AU details and smooth surfaces. A hole has been skillfully plugged in the field area directly above Liberty's cleavage.
