Description
Census Level 1797 LM-1 Half Dime, MS64
1797 H10C 15 Stars MS64 NGC. LM-1, V-2, R.3. Three distinct obverse design subtypes exist for the 1797 half dimes, featuring 13 stars, 15 stars, or 16 stars. The 15 Stars type has an arrangement of eight stars to the left and seven stars to the right. It is clearly the most plentiful of all three types, and yet only a few hundred examples survive in all grades, mostly well worn or damaged, or both. Only a small number of Mint State examples exist, including about four Gems that are slightly finer than this Choice Mint State piece. We place it at about fifth or sixth finest of the variety.Because of the design layout, the center of the obverse is notoriously weak on these coins, as it is on this piece. However, the remaining obverse design elements are quite boldly defined. Both sides have full satin luster, the obverse pale gray with hints of blue, and the reverse mostly gold with sea-green and iridescent accents. Census: 12 in 64, 7 finer (6/08).
