    1797 Half Dime, AU58, V-4, LM-2
    Popular 16 Stars Type

1797 H10C 16 Stars AU58 NGC. V-4, LM-2, R.4. There are four varieties of 1797 half dimes, which include three major obverse design types: 15 stars, 16 stars, and 13 stars. There are two varieties of 16 star half dimes and V-4, LM-2 is distinguished by the position of a berry between the NI in UNITED on the reverse. The highly collectible 16 star type was struck after the 15 star variant, the additional star to represent Tennessee's admission to the Union. The extra star made the obverse look too crowded on the tiny half dime, however, and a decision was made to limit the number of stars at 13, hence the other design type for this year.
Many collectors attempt a set of the three star configurations, which are each given a separate entry in the Guide Book. The 15 star type is the most common, while the 13 star type is very elusive. The present coin exhibits heavy clash marks, and the irregular design definition is likely a result of the die state. The centers are particularly soft. Both sides exhibit deep blue-gray toning over bright surfaces. There are no marks of any significance. For all 1797 half dimes, NGC reports a population of 11 pieces in AU58 and 25 examples finer (9/11). It is unclear how many of these are the 16 star type (or the V-4, LM-2 variety for that matter), but it is safe to say the the number of higher graded examples of this variety at NGC is in the single digits.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 22ZZ, PCGS# 4259)
