    Description

    1797 Half Dime, XF45
    V-3, LM-3, 16 Stars Obverse

1797 H10C 16 Stars, V-3, LM-3, R.5, XF45 PCGS. Three different obverse dies were employed for coinage of the 1797 half dime, each with a different number of peripheral stars. This 16-star obverse was employed for two different die marriages: LM-2 and LM-3. Of these, LM-3 is the rarer, but it is not quite as elusive as the 13 Stars variety (LM-4). This Choice XF example displays a bold, even strike with steel-gray surfaces that yield hints of champagne toning. Slight friction over the high points of the design hardly softens the fine details in Liberty's hair and the eagle's plumage. (NGC ID# 22ZZ, Variety PCGS# 38599, Base PCGS# 4259)
