1800 Draped Bust Half Dime, MS63
    Famous LIBEKTY Variety, V-2, LM-3
    Ex: Eliasberg

1800 H10C LIBEKTY, V-2, LM-3, R.4, MS63 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. Mintage of half dimes resumed in 1800, and marked the introduction of the Heraldic Eagle reverse for the denomination, since no half dimes were struck in 1798 or 1799. Four die marriages struck a total of 40,000 coins. Two of the four die pairs -- LM-3 and LM-4 -- employ a broken R punch in LIBERTY to create the Guide Book listed LIBEKTY variant, which accounts for approximately 40% of the total 1800 mintage.

This important Select Uncirculated example is from the Eliasberg Collection. It is a richly toned LM-3 example that likely traces back to Thomas L. Elder in September, 1905 as recorded in the Clapp notebook. The obverse shows a sharp strike on Liberty except for slight weakness on the central curls, opposite die buckling that obscures BUS in PLURIBUS on the reverse. Weakness at the at the right-side obverse dentils and upper-right field stars exists as well. Attractive reddish-gold toning in the centers yields to bluish-gray patina at the margins.
