Description
1800 LM-3 Half Dime, MS65
Important and Popular LIBEKTY Error
One of the Finest Known Examples
1800 H10C LIBEKTY, V-2, LM-3, R.4, MS65 PCGS. CAC.
Attractive mustard and steel-blue toning unites with intensely
lustrous surfaces and an exceptionally strong strike to create
stunning eye appeal. The reverse die is rotated approximately 30
degrees counterclockwise, which is typical for the variety. A
small, shallow depression under the Y in LIBEKTY represents a
strike-through error, and as such, does not detract from the
grade.Of the five known die marriages of 1800 half dimes, only two are reasonably collectible. The LM-2 and LM-4 are both considered R.7, and the LM-5 is unique. Of the other two, the LM-1 is the most common die marriage of the year, and the present LM-3 LIBEKTY variety is quite scarce. The LIBEKTY error stems from a defective punch that was kept in service long after the end of its useful life due to the material limitations and budget constraints of our first U.S. Mint.
In terms of condition and eye appeal, the current coin resides in the upper echelon of not only the variety, but also the entire, short-lived Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle half dime series. The MS65 grade has only been awarded five times across the entire design type, and is bested by only four certifications in 65+, two in 66, two in 66+, and one in 68. The present offering is the only LIBEKTY in the MS65 category, with the only finer certifications being two 65+s, one 66, and one 66+. As always, the possibility of resubmissions inflating these numbers is present. Given the eye appeal of this coin and rarity of both the variety and design type in high grade, spirited bidding should ensue.
