    Important 1802 Half Dime Rarity

1802 H10C Fine Details, Damaged NCS. V-1, LM-1, R.5. The 1802 Half Dime was a favorite of Logan and McCloskey, who devoted 33 pages to this single issue in Federal Half Dimes. Although not readily apparent on this example, the reverse has a rim break over E of UNITED, similar to the latest states of 1801 LM-2 which utilized this same reverse die. Among key-date coins in various series throughout the entire United States coinage arena, the 1802 Half Dime is well-known and particularly elusive. This offering represents only the eighth time that Heritage (or our predecessor firms) have offered an example at auction, and four of those eight appearances were for the same coin. Until recently, this was considered an extremely rare date, despite a mintage of over 3,000 coins. In 1883, Harold Newlin suggested a population of 16 coins. More recent research has shown that the real number of survivors is approximately 30 coins. More important, however, than the population is the number of sale appearances. From 1859 to 1998, a total of 167 auction appearances have been recorded, or barely over one example per year.
This example has light gray coloration with hints of gold toning, and numerous minor scratches and other small imperfections. The surfaces are wavy or waffled with several dents in the central obverse and reverse. For the specialist who has not yet acquired an example, this would be an excellent opportunity, especially given that there is no example of this date coming up for sale in the Jules Reiver Collection.
