    1802 V-1, LM-1 Half Dime, Good 6
    Only 50 to 60 Survive

1802 H10C Good 6 PCGS. V-1, LM-1, R.5. The 1802 half dime is an absolute rarity with only about 50 to 60 examples known in all grades, and it ranks among the all-time great regular issue rarities from the Philadelphia Mint. According to Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, it is the 62nd greatest U.S. coin. It is also one of only three U.S. half dimes listed in 100 Greatest U.S. Coins. The others are the 1792 half disme, and the unique 1870-S. Garrett and Guth write:

"The story of the 1802 half dime is the classic story of attrition. Here's a coin that started out with a very low mintage [3,060], most of which was decimated over time as coins were lost or destroyed through various silver melts."

The present offering is an important opportunity for the specialist, as many of the greatest half dime collections lack or lacked an example of this issue. This delightful example has deep pewter-gray surfaces with only a few minor surface marks that are expected for a lower grade coin. All of the major design elements are present, including about 75% of the obverse border and half of the reverse border.(Registry values: P10) (NGC ID# 2328, PCGS# 4268)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
