    Description

    1802 Half Dime, V-1, LM-1, Fine Details
One of Only 32 Distinct Examples Known

1802 H10C V-1, LM-1, Amato-119, R.5 -- Bent -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. The 1802 half dime is one of the classics in U.S. numismatics. The mintage is unknown, with there being a variance between the number recorded struck in the calendar year (13,010 pieces) and the number believed to have actually been struck bearing the 1802 date (3,060 pieces). Only 32 distinct examples were discovered by Jon Amato during the years he researched his definitive reference on the series. Medium gray-violet patina covers each side with darker accents surrounding the devices. Numerous marks are distributed over each side.
Ex: A. Bernard Shore Collection (Superior, 1/1988), Details of Fine 12 or so, but damaged, lot 833; Fred J. Casterline and Brooks Hall Collections Sale (Superior, 1/1989), About Good 3, lot 1228.

It is our sad duty to report the death of cataloger and researcher extradinaire, Jon Amato. Jon worked for several years on his comprehensive reference Numismatic Background and Census of 1802 Half Dimes. This slim 64-page work covers all known 1802 half dimes. His work was awarded the NLG's award for best specialized book at the ANA on August 3.
