    1802 Half Dime, Fair Details
    V-1, LM-1, 36 Examples Traced

1802 H10C V-1, LM-1, R.5 -- Damaged, Bent -- ANACS. Fair Details, Net Poor 1. The 1802 half dime is one of the first issues that comes to mind when contemplating the rarest United States silver coins. From a reported mintage of 3,060 pieces, the most current census for the date includes just 36 examples. While this example (Amato-130) ranks among the most heavily circulated survivors, that makes it accessible to a larger group of numismatists who would not otherwise have had an opportunity to add this great rarity to their collections. The planchet of this mostly bright silver-gray representative was severely bent at one time and later straightened. Fortunately, the reverse of the coin is the side that suffered the most, being worn smooth and displaying numerous small digs. Similar light pock marks are noted on the obverse, but much of the detail was spared, including the final 3 digits of the date. The upper loop of the familiar nearly closed 2 that touches the portrait is unmistakable.
