Description

    MS62 1803 Large 8 Half Dime
    V-2, LM-3, Deeply Toned

1803 H10C Large 8 MS62 NGC. V-2, LM-3, R.3. Attribution of 1803 half dimes is easy, with only two dies each known for obverse and reverse. The Large 8 obverse, with 3 rotated clockwise, narrows the choice to LM-2 or LM-3, while the reverse with a leaf joined to the left diagonal of A3 diagnoses the LM-3 pairing. Although this is the most available die marriage of the year, it is still elusive in the higher grades and conditionally rare in Mint State. This piece shows the strike a bit soft in the centers, with surfaces having mottled gray and deep blue toning. A shallow mark in the right obverse field out from stars 12 and 13 prevents an even higher grade. Census for both Large 8 varieties: 5 in 62, 2 finer (2/10).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 2329, PCGS# 4269)

    Weight: 1.35 grams
