Choice About Uncirculated 1805 Half Dime

1805 H10C AU55 PCGS. LM-1, V-1, R.4. This is the only die variety of the date, and it is an elusive variety with perhaps 100 to 150 survivors. The majority of those that have survived are in low grades, or are damaged, or both. The opportunity to acquire a high quality example seldom occurs. Given the demand from die variety collectors as well as date collectors, few of these come to market, regardless of grade. Like every known example of this variety, the drapery and bust of Liberty is almost completely void of detail. It is interesting to note that on this particular coin the reverse die is rotated about 15 degrees counter clockwise. On most specimens of 1805 half dimes, the O in OF is weakly struck, but because the die had rotated, the F and wing are weakly struck on this specimen. This is the result of a deeply engraved bust on Liberty, and area which is always poorly defined on this issue, and the unfortunate devices behind Liberty's bust are equally weak. The surfaces of this particular coin show a few nicks which will identify it in the future, notably a nick to the right of the N in UNITED, and a very minor scuff just below the end of the branch. Light to medium gray in color, with some iridescent gold starting to form over the surfaces. The 1805 half dime is a very rare issue, particularly so when found in this high grade. An important coin for the specialist.(#4272) (Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 232A, PCGS# 4272)
