    1805 Half Dime, V-1, LM-1, AU Details

1805 H10C V-1, LM-1, R.4 -- Obverse Scratched -- NGC Details. AU. A single die pair produced the entire 15,600-coin mintage of the 1805 half dime and, unlike the ten cent piece of the same year which is obtainable in high grades for type purposes, the 1805 half dime is scarce in all grades, and Mint State pieces are prohibitively rare. This olive-gray example displays nearly complete detail, though a couple old scratches on the lower bust preclude a numeric grade assessment from NGC. As the issue is known for being weakly struck, this piece understandably exhibits considerable softness on the right obverse border and the upper-right portion of the reverse, though the central motifs are well-defined. (NGC ID# 232A, Variety PCGS# 38611, Base PCGS# 4272)
