    Description

Important AU Representative, 1794 Half Dollar, O-101a

1794 50C AU50 NGC. O-101a, R.4. This is the most obtainable variety from this scarce year, and is a real prize as such. It is also a later die state, with a die break from the rim to the wreath between UNITED and STATES. The O-101 is believed to be one of the final varieties struck in this year, despite Overton's order of listing; it was probably among the 18,164 pieces delivered February 4, 1795 from 1794 dated dies. The subvariety O-101(a), to which this piece belongs, is most easily distinguished by an additional die crack (as struck) on the reverse, with this die break extending from the rim through the F in OF, then turning upward at a sharp angle to just miss the outer berry, ending at the last S in STATES.
Choice for the grade, the surfaces display deep olive-brown patina over both sides, with the only noticeable surface flaws being minor roughness on the lower obverse (as struck) from a poorly-prepared planchet, and a milling mark that resides on the upper left obverse field, just to the right of stars 6 through 8. It is interesting to note that, while only 23,464 examples of the first issue of United States half dollar were struck, no less than 10 die combinations were used from six obverse and six reverse dies, an extraordinary amount of work to put into such a small number of coins.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
