Description
1794 O-105 Half Dollar, AU53
Early Die State, Condition Census Specimen
1794 50C AU53 NGC. O-105, R.5. This early die state example
has no die cracks or clash marks with bold eagle details, including
the head, which is found nearly flat on later die states. The
obverse die was first used for O-105 and O-111, later for O-106,
where a heavy die crack spans the upper part of that die. The
reverse die was used for O-105 and later for O-109, although the
latter variety is either unique or unknown in silver.Four examples of the 1794 O-105 die marriage stand out among all others according to Stephen Herrman's autumn 2010 revision of Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars. All other survivors appear to grade no better than VF35. The finest pieces include:
1. AU58 PCGS. Eliasberg Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1662; ANR (8/2006), lot 547; Stack's (11/2007), lot 2003.
2. AU53 NGC. Goldberg Coins (2/2009), lot 923. The present specimen.
3. AU53 NGC. Heritage (3/2008), lot 637; Stack's (7/2008), lot 4256.
4. AU50 PCGS. Superior (3/2005), lot 2204.
The fields are reflective light gray with attractive blue-green toning along the left obverse border. Light adjustment marks are noted at the center of the obverse, along with a few trivial hairlines and marks of later origin. The strike is good and nicely centered, with full obverse and reverse borders. Ample mint luster adds to the aesthetic appeal of this outstanding specimen. Census: 6 in 53, 10 finer for all 1794 varieties and including resubmissions (2/11).(Registry values: N7079)
