Description

Very Rare O-106 1794 Half Dollar, AU53
Fourth Finest in the Herrman Listing

1794 50C AU53 NGC. O-106, Low R.6. This very rare die pairing shows the second star touching Liberty's lowest hair curl, although the present piece shows no trace of the die crack from the edge to LI, the top of the head, and star 10 that many examples show. The 21 Berry reverse shows 10 berries left, 11 right, the only such for 1794.
While any 1794 half dollar Overton variety is at a minimum scarce, regardless of condition, the Overton-106 is among the rarer prime (regardless of die state) die pairings for the year, exceeded only by the O-102 (High R.6), O-107 (R.6), O-108 (R.7), O-109 and O-111 (each R.8), and O-110 (High R.7). In fact, it is not a stretch to say that the O-102, O-106, and O-107 die pairings are among the rarest of the year for which examples appear occasionally at public auction.
This piece is certified AU53 by NGC, a specimen with a high quotient of eye appeal and luster and accurately graded, in our opinion. The surfaces appear medium dove-gray, but a lamp reveals considerable pinkish-gold on the high points and aqua near the rims, along with generous luster overall and some pretty copper-toned outlining of the devices on each side. A few distributed marks and scrapes are in concert with the grade, none of them overly distracting or severe. A few minor adjustment marks are confined to the area of the right reverse rim.
This coin appears to be fourth finest among recent auction records compiled by Steve Herrman. The former Worrell AU53 NGC coin (Superior, 9/1993, lot 1260) is now an AU58 PCGS, making three in that grade with the present piece fourth. In any case, this is a mightily impressive coin with equally impressive rarity and aesthetics.(Registry values: N7079)
