Description

1794 O-101a Half Dollar, VF25
Remarkably Sharp for the Grade

1794 50C O-101a, T-7, High R.3, VF25 PCGS. The die crack at the F in OF is present from the dentil to the first leaf, but it does not yet continue to the final S in STATES, as is typical of the O-101a die state. Another crack connects the rim to the wreath branch between the D in UNITED and the first S in STATES. The older PCGS holder designates this piece O-101, without regard for the die state. Star 1 pierces the lowest hair curl and star 13 touches the bust below the tip. This midgrade 1794 half dollar is boldly and evenly struck, showing sharp border dentils and remarkably well-defined devices, with no adjustment marks. The top of Liberty's head is worn, but all major flowing hair curls are delineated. On the reverse, the eagle shows sharp detail in the wings, worn only on the breast and neck feathers. Both sides have old-time olive-gray and gold patina and are devoid of bothersome abrasions.
