Description

1794 O-101a, T-7 Half Dollar, VF25
Scarce First Year Type Coin

1794 50C O-101a, T-7, R.3, VF25 PCGS. Tompkins Die Stage 1/5. Die cracks through the F in OF, and between nearby leaves, help attribute this first-year Flowing Hair half. The initial delivery of 5,300 half dollars was made on December 1, 1794, while the second delivery of 18,164 half dollars was on February 4, 1795, assumed by numismatists to all be dated 1794. Chief Engraver Robert Scot designed and engraved the new Flowing Hair half dollar motif, which was a reduction in size from the October 1794 Flowing Hair dollar issue, also engraved by Scot. The obverse of this excellent specimen has a cream-gray portrait along with an olive-gray field and glimpses of brick-red throughout the border. The reverse exhibits golden-brown near the letters, while the field is sea-green and the eagle and wreath display lavender toning. A pair of minor and parallel adjustment marks (as coined) cross the cheek, but abrasions are trivial aside from a slight rim knock at 5:30 and faded marks near star 7 and the IB in LIBERTY. Even wear with good design definition of hair curls and eagle feathers.
