    1794 Flowing Hair Half, Well-Preserved XF45
    O-106, Solid Condition Census Coin

1794 50C O-106, T-4, Low R.6, XF45 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/1. Every 1794 variety is scarce-to-rare in higher grades, and all die marriages except O-101 and O-101a are at least very scarce at the VF level and finer. Choice XF coins are seldom seen regardless of variety. This XF45 example is solidly within the Condition Census for the O-106 die pair, struck from an early state of the dies without the bisecting die crack that brought a premature end to the obverse die.

Glints of mint luster remain in sheltered areas throughout both sides of this sharply struck coin. Iridescent hues occupy areas not dominated by blue and reddish-gold shades. Liberty's hair strands are sharply defined, while the stars and date are well-defined. The reverse shows a few faint adjustment marks that do little to disturb the bold eagle and wreath motifs. The Tompkins Condition Census of 58,55,53,50,40,40,40 must make room for the present coin, which challenges an even finer grade.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
