    1795 2 Leaves Half, O-109, AU
    Sharp and Richly Toned

1795 50C 2 Leaves AU50 PCGS Secure. O-109, R.4. The O-109 die pairing of the 1795 2 Leaves Bust half is easily identified by the four points of stars 1 and 2 about equidistant from the lowest hair curl, and there are none of the milling defects that mark the O-108. On the reverse the berries are nine left, eight right, with two each inside under the left and right wings. Two of the milling segments are joined, just to the left of OF. The surfaces on this About Uncirculated example are well-balanced and well-centered, with full, sharp denticles, and light wear over the design high points. The obverse is richly toned in charcoal-gray, cobalt-blue, and orange-russet shades. The reverse is lighter with dove-gray patina throughout and orange-russet around the devices. A few minor abrasions are concentrated in the lower obverse field above the first two digits in the date. This piece appears at the low end of the Condition Census according to our most recent Stephen Herrman reference.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
