1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar, VG10
Low-Survival O-106 Variety

1795 50C 2 Leaves, O-106, T-30, R.6, VG10 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/3. The O-106 (T-30) obverse die spelled doom for many reverse dies in the 1795 series, most of which retired with catastrophic die cracks. The first obverse use was the O-102 (T-26) die pair. Subsequent uses include the short-lived O-101 (T-28), the O-103 (T-29), and the year-ending O-107 (T-31) pairing. Cracked but never broken, the obverse die outlasted them all. It was the last Flowing Hair obverse struck prior to introduction of the Draped Bust design in 1796.

The O-106 die marriage was particularly short-lived. An interesting note in the Tompkins reference suggests the fatal die crack occurred during hardening of the reverse working die. No O-106 examples are known without at least some portion of the heavy, bisecting reverse die crack. Struck with the reverse rotated about 70° counterclockwise in relation to the obverse, this example displays bi-level sinking of the die with two levels of wear. Accordingly, the O-106 is best evaluated based on its obverse condition -- seen here with sharpness that easily meets or exceeds the assigned grade. Gold and blue overtones enhance smooth, problem-free surfaces.
