Description

1795 Half Dollar, AU55
Among the Top Ten O-130 Half Dollars
CAC Endorsed

1795 50C 2 Leaves, O-130, T-8, Low R.5, AU55 NGC. CAC. Tompkins Die State 3/3. Star 1 pierces Liberty's first curl (which is widely open), and 95 in the date are widely spaced. The wreath has its berries arranged 7-10, the only 1795 reverse configured as such. This is a Choice About Uncirculated example, lightly toned in pale-gray and pleasing steel-blue shades. The fields and devices show only a few scattered, tiny marks throughout either side. The coin is a bit softly struck -- especially at the rims, which are weak at the obverse dentils -- the result of an uneven strike on the screw press. Numerous areas of obverse die clashing and light die cracks along the reverse legend at OF AMERICA confirm the late die state. Still, the surfaces are remarkably smooth and attractive for a Flowing Hair half dollar, with bits of golden luster interspersed among the devices for exceptional eye appeal. This coin sits just outside the Condition Census for the O-130 (T-8) variety, where it is the only example among the top ten specimens with CAC endorsement.
