1795 Small Head Half, Fine 12
    O-128, Condition Census Example

1795 50C 2 Leaves, Small Head, O-128, T-18, High R.5, Fine 12 NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/3. Struck from a new master die, the O-128 Small Head half is both an absolute and condition scarcity in the Flowing Hair series. Always weakly struck, the finest known example is a VF coin. Not surprisingly, Overton, Tompkins, and Herrman all list Fine 12 coins at the low-end of their Condition Census. Three Small Head varieties exist among the 31 1795 varieties, yet none of the Small Head portraits are exactly alike. O-126, O-127, and O-128 make up the trio. Of the three, only O-128 has a unique obverse paired with a unique 9 berries left, 9 berries right reverse. This example is delightfully smooth and exceptional for the grade, with faint blue overtones that embellish the old-silver patina. The rims and dentils are strong for the assigned grade. A glass reveals only tiny marks and insignificant abrasions. The feather detail on the wings approaches an even finer grade. (NGC ID# 24E7, Variety PCGS# 39251, Base PCGS# 6054)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
