Description
1795 Two Leaves Half Dollar, AU50
O-121, Y Over Star
1795 50C 2 Leaves, Y Over Star, O-121, T-2, High R.4, AU50
PCGS. Tompkins Die State 2/1. Die clash from the eagle's wing
appears in the field right of Liberty's profile. The Y in LIBERTY
is cut over a star, the remnants of which remain visible and aid in
variety attribution. According to Tompkins, one near-Mint example
qualifies for the O-121 Condition Census, and Stephen Herrman
reports that an AU50 was last offered in 2010, attesting to the
conditional rarity of this 1795 die marriage. This well-struck Flowing Hair half dollar enjoys strong detail on the portrait, wings, and even on the breast feathers, which are faintly visible. All the peripheral elements are similarly strong. Mostly light silver with golden and gunmetal accents at the rims. Adjustment marks occur around the upper-right reverse border.
Ex: Johnson-Blue Collection (Stack's, 8/2010), lot 486. Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2019), lot 3714.
