Description

Extraordinary 1795 Flowing Hair Half Dollar, MS 63 NGC

1795 50C MS 63 NGC. O-105, R.4. Half dollar production commenced in 1794 with a delivery of 5,300 pieces on October 15. These coins bore Robert Scot's Flowing Hair design. A further 18,164 1794-dated examples were delivered on February 4, 1795, followed by 299,680 coins dated 1795. After the latter examples were delivered, the incoming Mint Director, Henry William DeSaussure, halted half dollar production so that his staff could concentrate on silver dollars and gold coins. In doing so, he created a popular two-year type that is actively pursued by type collectors and half dollar specialists alike.
This is the first Mint State 1795 Flowing Hair half dollar that we have offered in more than two years. An exquisite specimen, both the obverse and the reverse are conspicuous by their boldness of strike. Every curl in Liberty's hair is fully detailed, and the eagle's portrait is equally sharp. The surfaces are expertly centered within crisply denticulated borders and there are remarkably few abrasions for the grade. Rich charcoal toning blankets both sides, but antique-golden undertones are noted at certain angles. NGC and PCGS combined have certified a mere seven coins in MS 63, and only six finer (7/00).
From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set.
