    Description

    1796 15 Stars, Well-Defined VF30
    The Ten Eyck Specimen, O-101

1796 50C 15 Stars, O-101, T-1, R.5, VF30 PCGS. Amato-126. Dark gray patina around the borders frames the lighter gray centers that shows hints of lavender on the obverse and soft green on the reverse. Liberty's hair is well-defined as are the drapery folds, and the eyebrow and pupil show clearly. The eagle's wings, clearly separated from the torso, display considerable feather detail, especially throughout the right (facing) wing. Both sides are remarkably devoid of mentionable marks. A planchet defect is visible on the rim above the B in LIBERTY and another between ER. A faint pinscratch from the beak to the tip of the adjacent palm leaf helps to identify the coin, as do two small toning spots on the torso. This coin is housed in an old green label holder.

    Variety
: O-101, R.5. This 15 star obverse is paired with the Overton Reverse A, the first of two reverses that were used to coin the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollars.

    Population Data (7/16)
: PCGS reports eight 1796 15 Stars submissions in VF30 and 17 examples finer.

    Commentary
: The Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar bearing the date 1796 or 1797 is one of the rarest U.S. type coins, behind only the 1796 No Stars and 1808 quarter eagles. Not only is a 1796 or 1797 half dollar necessary for the completion of a type set (which would undoubtedly be an advanced set), but the 1796 15 Stars issue is necessary for a date or variety collection. The present coin pedigrees to the famous James Ten Eyck Collection

    Provenance
: James Ten Eyck Collection (B. Max Mehl, 5/1922), lot 432; James A. Stack Collection (Stack's, 3/1975), lot 314; Moreira Collection, Part 3 (Superior Galleries, 1/1989), lot 4418; Bowers and Merena (9/1992), lot 1034.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
