Description

Excessively Rare 16 Stars 1796 Half Dollar

1796 XF 45 NGC. 16 Stars. O-102, R.6. The half dollars of 1796-97 are one of the most highly regarded and valuable type coins in all of U.S. numismatics. Of the two years, the 1796 coins are rarer, and the 16 Stars variety is the scarcer of the two 1796 varieties. Usually only seen in Fine or lesser grades, high grade pieces such as this are rarely encountered. Most of the high grade specimens known of this type are from the estate of Colonel E.H.R. Green, but most of those pieces are prooflike, which this coin is not.
The surfaces have an overall steel-gray appearance over both sides with light golden-brown patina scattered about. Striking details on the portrait of Liberty are uncommonly bold. On the reverse there is slight softness of details on the eagle's breast but well defined elsewhere. The most noticeable marks are a couple on the upper and lower neck of Liberty on the obverse, and a scalloped mark below the head of the eagle. A premium example of this very rare type and sure to be of great interest to advanced type collectors.
