Description
1797 Half Dollar, AU Details
Popular O-101a Late Die State Variety
Cleneay Specimen
1797 50C -- Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. AU Details. O-101a, High
R.4. Amato-408. Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollars with the
details of About Uncirculated design features infrequently appear
for sale at auction or in dealers' fixed price lists. Indeed, our
recently published research indicates that of the 270 separate
1796-1797 half dollar specimens we have so far accounted for, only
15 pieces (5.6%) grade About Uncirculated. The AU Details coin in
the present lot should elicit serious attention from the collector
seeking a 1796 or 1797 half dollar for type purposes or for the
variety specialist desiring a 1797 late die state O-101a
specimen.Variegated gold-orange, bluish-gray, and russet patina cascades over both obverse and reverse. Not only are the design elements well-defined, but several of the die cracks characteristic of this late die state reverse show clearly. These include the crack through the tops of ES in STATES (the incipient crack on this reverse) that intersects the one traveling through the two adjacent palm leaves, the crack from the rim at 1:30 to the upper-right part of O in OF then through the palm wreath to the middle-edge of the right (facing) wing, the crack from the rim at 10:30 that extends through the first T in STATES and the laurel wreath to the back of the eagle's head, the one from the rim at 9:30 through the laurel wreath to the top of the left (facing) wing, and the crack through the bottoms of ST that connects those from the rim at 9:30 and 10:30. As previously stated, the presence of these cracks is significant for the variety specialist.
A few very light criss-cross adjustment marks are visible on the left (facing) wing and adjacent torso. A minute rim ding between RT in LIBERTY and two arrow-like marks pointing to the upper-left top of star 14 will aid in identifying this coin. Prospective bidders should not be dissuaded by the NCS disclaimer as the cleaning is very light and not overly distracting.
