Description
Notable 1797 XF Details Fifty Cent
Elusive O-101 Variety, R.5
1797 50C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. O-101, R.5.
The reverse die of the 1797 O-101 variety evidently cracked quite
early, resulting in the vast majority of 1797 O-101 coins having
myriad reverse die cracks, this later die state designated O-101a.
Stephen Herrman recognizes this in his Auction & Mail Bid Prices
Realized for Bust Half Dollars, 1794-1839, Autumn 2008, Number
33, where he gives the early die state an R.5 rating, and the later
die state (O-101a) a high R.4. The 2005 Overton Early Half
Dollar reference, on the other hand, assigns an R.5 rarity
rating to both dies states. We concur with Herrman, as we have seen
far fewer O-101 appearances at auction compared to O-101a
examples. One cannot help but to be struck by the sharp delineation on the design elements of this XF Details 1797 O-101 example. Liberty's hair detail is very strong, as is that on the drapery and the eagle's wing and tail feathers. Moreover, the dentilation is bold on both sides. A mix of sky-blue and purple toning concentrates at the obverse margins, leaving the center area mostly light silver-gray. The former color palette is more extensive throughout the reverse. Close examination reveals no significant abrasions, though some fine hairlines and light granularity show up under high-power magnification. Moderate adjustment marks, slanting just slightly from upper right to lower left, extend through Liberty's head from the chin on up. These are essentially the only pedigree markers on the coin.
All in all, this is a perfectly acceptable piece for a high-grade type or date/variety collection, regardless of the NCS disclaimer. The cleaning is light, and does not take away from the coin's overall appeal. Advanced collectors are sure to give this piece special attention.
