    1797 O-101a Half Dollar, Good 6
    Rarest U.S. Silver Type
    Problem-Free Surfaces

1797 50C O-101a, T-1, High R.4, Good 6 NGC. CAC. Amato-Unlisted. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dollar is the rarest U.S. silver type coin. The Guide Book reports a combined mintage of 3,918 pieces for all 1796 and 1797 varieties, and perhaps fewer than 300 examples of that production have survived. The present straw-gold and ice-blue example has refreshingly few marks. The date is bold, and the other legends are clear aside from the fraction denominator and the final few letters in AMERICA. A few light adjustment marks, as coined, are apparent on Liberty's neck.

The 1797 O-101a die state is attributed by the die crack from the rim between D and S that extends through the laurel wreath to the upper part of the eagle's wing. An important opportunity to acquire this early silver rarity that is always in demand. Original, problem-free surfaces at this grade level are infrequently seen. This piece is a new discovery since the December 2012 Heritage-published reference The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
