    1797 Half Dollar, Pleasing VF30
    The Rare O-102 Variety

1797 50C O-102, T-2, Low R.6, VF30 PCGS. Amato-504. This pleasing mid-grade example displays light silver-gray surfaces with traces of pale violet and olive-gold toning gravitating to the margins. Appropriate high-end Very Fine definition shows on the design elements, including Liberty's hair and drapery, and the eagle's wing and tail feathers. A mark between the bridge of Liberty's nose and star 10 will help to identify the coin, as will an upper-left to lower-right pinscratch on the eagle's lower neck. An excellent choice for a mid-to high-grade type collection. Housed in a green label holder.

    Variety:
O-102, Low R.6. Subsequent to the shattering of Overton's Reverse A, a new reverse (Reverse B) was paired with the 1797 obverse. The Overton Reverse B is easily distinguished by the position of the leaf below the second T in STATES. The 1797 O-102 variety is the rarest of the four Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar varieties.

    Commentary:
Of the 270 Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollars documented in the Heritage-published The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797, only 35, or about 13 percent, are classified as 1797 O-102.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
