    Important 1797 O-101 Half Dollar, VF30 NGC

1797 50C VF30 NGC. O-101a, R.5. This opportunity is extremely important to the specialist or the type collector. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle half dollar design type was only produced in 1796 and 1797, and a total of four die varieties are known for the two years. From these four die pairs, a total of 3,918 coins were produced. Today, it is believed that the 1796 15 Stars variety is the most common, followed by this 1797 O-101 half dollar. The 1796 16 Stars is next in the rarity lineup, and the 1797 O-102 is clearly the rarest. Heritage numismatist and cataloger Jon Amato is currently researching this series, including the pedigrees of known examples, and has identified, to date, about 220 different examples of all four varieties. Such a population falls in line with the opinions of half dollar variety specialists who have labeled each of these varieties as Rarity-5. An R.5 variety exists to the extent of 31 to 75 coins, based on the Sheldon Rarity Scale, with an average of 53 coins per variety (or 212 for all four varieties).
This splendid half dollar has light silvery-gray at the centers of each side. The obverse has blue-green and amber peripheral toning while the reverse has wisps of light gold at the border. A few very minor adjustment marks are seen at the lower reverse. Struck from a later die sate with numerous reverse cracks.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
