1801 Half Dollar, AU50 CAC
Key First Year Heraldic Eagle
Low-Mintage Date, O-101, T-2

1801 50C O-101, T-2, R.2, AU50 PCGS. CAC. Tompkins Die Stage 2/3. The Heraldic Eagle Reverse made its first appearance on the Draped Bust half dollar in 1801, with low mintage of 30,289 coins that was comprised of an August 1801 coinage delivery and two December deliveries. The 1801 is a key date for the Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle half dollar series and is highly sought after. One obverse die was used in 1801, with two reverse dies. The T-2 die marriage is attributed by the reverse die with AM joined at base, and all known examples have numerous raised lumps on the lower reverse that were caused by die rust. Steve Tompkins believes the rust defects represent evidence that the T-2 reverse die was finished long before usage in preparation for a future mintage.

This excellent example is not only a grade rarity but has earned CAC endorsement for quality, which makes the coin even more desirable. Natural antique gray toning, becoming darker at the peripheries and lighter on the high points, is quite attractive. The strike is good for the date, with central elements of the portrait displaying beautifully defined hair detail, along with a fully struck motto and most eagle feathers showing nice definition. Weakly struck areas include the obverse stars, and some upper reverse stars and clouds. The Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle half dollar series is notorious for having weak strikes, but this example is above average. A few old marks by obverse star 12 are toned over. Some underlying luster remains beneath the patina, and the overall eye appeal is outstanding.
