Description

1802 Half Dollar, O-101, VF30
Bold Central Details

1802 50C VF30 PCGS. O-101. R.3. Ex: Benson Collection. This colorful, 1802 Draped Bust half dollar features classic eye appeal with rich, 2-sided target toning. The coin possesses nice hair detail for the VF30 grade, which is perhaps a touch conservative except for some ancient hairlines hiding beneath the toning. Aqua, gold, and deep-blue color with electric-blue highlights -- most likely acquired from years of storage in an original coin board -- enhances both sides of this attractive half. Always in demand from collectors, the Overton variety O-101 is the only die pairing for this scarce date.
Per the Benson catalog, a previous owner purchased this coin from Ira S. Reed on June 3, 1944 for the princely sum of $15.50.
Ex: Benson Collection, Part II (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 2/2002), lot 883.
