Rarely Offered O-103 1805/4 Half, Possibly the Finest Known

1805/4 50C AU 55 PCGS. O-103, R.5. Easily identified as an O-103 by the distance of star 1 from Liberty's hair curl. A very scarce variety, we have only offered one other 103 in the past ten years and that was a low grade piece with initials scratched into it. The March issue of Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars, compiled by Stephen Herrman, indicates that only four examples of this variety (without the triangular die crack) have been sold since September of last year. The highest priced example was a VF 20 in a Downey Mail Bid Sale that brought $3,660. The Condition Census listed in the third edition of Overton is (50, 50, 45, 40, 30), which would indicate that this piece would easily fit into the upper tier of the Condition Census if not qualifying as the finest known.
The silvery-gray surfaces show just a faint overlay of light patina on each side with deeper color around the obverse periphery. The reverse is more uniformly and deeply colored. Good portions of mint luster are still evident, especially on the reverse. Sharply struck overall except on the BE in LIBERTY, which is diagnostic for the variety. Relatively mark-free with the only mentionable abrasion being a small nick over Liberty's temple. (NGC ID# 24EH, PCGS# 6070)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
