    Description

    Near Mint 1806/5 O-102 Half Dollar, AU58

1806/5 50C AU58 NGC. O-102, R.3. Second use of Obverse 1, and the first of three uses of Reverse B. This is called a six-berry reverse; however, it usually only shows five berries because of heavy die clashing (which is the case here). More easily attributable by the bold line to the right of the upper right corner of the shield.
This is a lovely, high grade coin that is far superior to most examples known, including the Queller piece. Almost complete mint luster remains and each side is richly toned with lighter centers that are surrounded by deep gray and rose toning and sea-green around the outer devices. Better struck on the reverse stars than usually seen, the hair detail on the obverse is especially well defined. There are no noticeable abrasions on either side.
This piece represents an excellent balance of grade and value. The finest piece sold in recent years is a PCGS MS62 and it brought $27,600 in 2004. An MS60 coin was sold in 1999 for more than $10,000. The only AU58 coin sold recently (also an NGC coin) sold in our September Long Beach Auction in 2006 for $5,463.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
