    Description

    1806 Half Dollar, AU53
    O-106, Knob 6, Small Stars
    Semiprooflike Fields

1806 50C Knob 6, Small Stars, O-106, T-4, R.4, AU53 PCGS. Hints of warm golden toning accent the bright, satiny surfaces of this lightly circulated but still well-detailed O-106 representative. Weakness in the clouds and stars to the upper-right of the eagle's head is the only mentionable striking deficiency. Semiprooflike reflectivity is evident in the protected regions of the fields, particularly on the reverse.

Variety: O-106, R.4. There is a Knobbed 6 in the date and the 8 is recut. The reverse shows a stem through the eagle's claw, with six berries on the olive branch; sharp die lines protrude from the upper-right corner of the shield and from the fletchings toward the tailfeathers.

Population Data (9/15): Of those pieces certified and attributed as O-106, PCGS has seen just one in this grade and one finer; NGC shows none in this grade with two finer. Other representatives are known to exist, but are unattributed by the certification services at this time.

Heritage Commentary: O-106 is a very scarce variety, but its elusiveness is most fully appreciated in AU and Mint State grades, where it is conditionally rare. Nonetheless, the acquisition of such a coin would serve well as a type representative for the collector seeking to expand from the more available varieties of this year.

    Provenance: Purchased from Harry Laibstain (7/2007). (NGC ID# 24EJ, Variety PCGS# 39306, Base PCGS# 6075)

    Weight: 13.48 grams

    Metal: 89.24% Silver, 10.76% Copper

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
