    Description

1806 Draped Bust Half Dollar, MS63
    O-120, Pointed 6, Attractive Toning

1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem, O-120, T-28, R.3, MS63 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/1. Struck from an early die stage, although the obverse die shows extensive die clashing and cracking. The reverse die is an intermediate state with a nearly perfect die, showing a light crack above the first A in AMERICA but no signs of die chipping on the vertical shield stripes and no die crack above UNITED. Attractive aquamarine tones at the margins merge with peach-gold and warm-gray shades over the central devices, with nice mint luster shining through the natural patina on both sides.
The strike is sharp save for minor blending at Liberty's highest hair strands and at field star 12 above the central scroll section, where a glass reveals a few light adjustment marks. The only other marks of note are a pair of shallow lines from near star 11 to the neck area. Among the finest for the O-120 variety in this Select Uncirculated condition -- tied for third in the Condition Census listings by Parsley, Herrman, and Tompkins. Population (all Pointed 6, With Stem varieties): 11 in 63, 17 finer (3/16). (NGC ID# 24EJ, Variety PCGS# 39325, Base PCGS# 6071)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
