Description

Lustrous and Flashy 1806 Draped Bust Half, MS 64 NGC

1806 50C Pointed 6, Stem MS 64 NGC. O-120, R.3. When half dollar production resumed in 1801 after a three-year hiatus, Engraver Robert Scot redesigned the reverse with a heraldic eagle motif that is not unlike that on the Great Seal of the United States. A magnificent near-Gem, both sides of this coin radiate intense satin luster. There are modest golden-gray overtones throughout, but we can find no abrasions that would seem to rule out an even higher grade. Every feature, including the denticles and the eagle's breast feathers, is crisply defined. We last offered an MS 64 1806 half dollar as lot 5973 in our Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale. That coin, an example of the O-115a die variety, was graded by PCGS and realized $18,400. Population: 6 in 64, with a mere 3 finer (7/00).
