1807 Draped Bust Half Dollar, MS65
O-105 Example, Second-Finest at PCGS
High Condition Census

1807 50C Draped Bust, O-105, T-4, R.1, MS65 PCGS. CAC. Tompkins Die State 3/2. John Reich was hired by the Mint as the new Assistant Engraver in April 1807, but Reich's Capped Bust design was not immediately implemented for the half dollar denomination. Auction records suggest about three fourths of the year had passed before the new design appeared. Perhaps as many as 75% of the 1907 half dollar produced were the old Draped Bust design -- theoretically, more than 700,000 pieces. Of that mintage, the 1807 Overton O-105 variety is one of the more available Draped Bust die pairs, although it is not surprising that Uncirculated survivors are a prize in any grade and Gem or finer pieces are extremely rare. This remarkably well-preserved MS65 O-105 is a middle die state coin, showing diagnostic die cracks and die clashing on both the obverse and the reverse. The die state does not diminish a sharp strike that exists on both sides. Attractive, warm-gray toning is softly lustrous with occasional golden accents. Only trivial tiny marks are discerned under magnification, none of which disturb the smooth fields or bold devices. Silver luster reveals an attractive pearlescent sheen when rotated under a light. This is a high condition census example, ranking second on the PCGS O-105 variety listing and one of fewer than a dozen Gem or finer 1807 Draped Bust survivors from all varieties combined. CAC endorsement adds to this coin's impressive resume. PCGS Population for the variety: 1 in 65, 1 finer. CAC (all 1807 Draped Bust varieties) 2 in 65, 0 finer (3/26).
