Inaugural Heraldic Eagle Issue

1801 50C O-101, T-2, R.3, XF45 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 3/4. The left foot of the first A in AMERICA hovers over the fourth wing feather, but does not touch the wing, and AME in AMERICA are joined at the base. Multiple rust lumps appear on both the obverse and reverse of this low-mintage 1801 -- the first year of the heraldic eagle reverse on a half dollar. This is a Choice XF example, with traces of golden mint luster remaining in Liberty's lower curls and sporadic gray-gold toning throughout both sides. Population (all varieties): 20 in 45, 18 finer (2/19).
