    1802 O-101 Draped Bust Half, AU53
    Challenging Low-Mintage Issue, CAC

1802 50C O-101, T-1, R.3, AU53 PCGS. CAC. Tompkins Die State 1/1. The first two Draped Bust, Large Eagle half dollars make a challenging pair for early half collectors. Both the 1801 and 1802 issues have small mintages, with the 1802 marginally scarcer than the 1801. Just 29,280 pieces were struck from a single pair of dies. This is an attractive About Uncirculated example, with glints of silver luster remaining among the stars and within Liberty's well-defined hair strands. The reverse is sharply struck as well, with slight weakness at field stars 4 and 5 and at cloud 7. Pleasing blue and sea-green toning at the margins enriches natural, golden-gray patina for exceptional eye appeal. This coin just misses the low end of the 1802 Condition Census, reported as 62,60,58,58,58,55 in the Tompkins reference. CAC endorsement is an important consideration. Population: 10 in 53, 11 finer. CAC: 1 in 53, 3 finer (3/20).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
